Mu'awiyah ibn Amr told us: Za'idah told us: Abu Janab al-Kalbi told us: Yazid ibn al-Bara' ibn Azib told me, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, who said: We were sitting in the prayer ground on the day of Adha, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to us and greeted the people, then said, "The first rite of this day of yours is the prayer." He said: He came forward and prayed two rak'ahs, then gave the greeting of peace, then faced the people, and was given a bow or a staff, and he leaned on it. He praised Allah and extolled Him, commanded them and forbade them, and said, "Whoever among you slaughtered early, it is merely a piece of meat he has fed to his family; the [proper] slaughter is only after the prayer." My maternal uncle Abu Burdah ibn Niyar stood up to him and said, "I slaughtered my sheep early, O Messenger of Allah, so that food could be prepared for us to gather over when we return, and I have a young milk-goat that is better than the one I slaughtered—will it suffice for me, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Yes, but it will not suffice for anyone after you." Then he said, "O Bilal." He said: He walked, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, followed him until he came to the women, and said, "O company of women, give charity, for charity is better for you." He said: I never saw a day with more severed anklets, necklaces, and earrings given away than that day.
