Muhammad b. Sabiq told us: Isa b. Dinar told us: My father told us that he heard al-Harith b. Abi Dirar al-Khuza'i say: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he invited me to Islam, and I entered it and acknowledged it. He then invited me to the zakat, and I acknowledged it, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me return to my people and call them to Islam and the payment of zakat; whoever responds to me, I will gather his zakat, and let the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, send a messenger to me at such-and-such a time so that he may bring what I have collected of zakat." When al-Harith had gathered the zakat from those who had responded to him, and the time arrived at which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to send someone to him, the messenger was delayed and did not come to him. Al-Harith thought that some displeasure had arisen against him from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger. So he called together the notables of his people and said to them, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had set a time for me at which he would send his messenger to collect what I had of the zakat, and it is not like the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to break his word, and I do not think his messenger's delay is due to anything but displeasure. So let us go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had sent al-Walid b. Uqba to al-Harith to collect what he had gathered of the zakat. When al-Walid set out and reached part of the way, he became afraid and turned back, and came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, al-Harith has withheld the zakat from me and wanted to kill me." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent out an expedition against al-Harith. Meanwhile al-Harith came forward with his companions, and as they met the expedition setting out from Madina, the expedition encountered al-Harith, and they said, "This is al-Harith." When he came upon them, he said to them, "To whom were you sent?" They said, "To you." He said, "Why?" They said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had sent al-Walid b. Uqba to you, and he claimed that you withheld the zakat from him and wanted to kill him." He said, "No, by Him who sent Muhammad with the truth, I never saw him at all, nor did he come to me." When al-Harith entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he said, "You withheld the zakat and wanted to kill my messenger?" He said, "No, by Him who sent you with the truth, I never saw him, nor did he come to me, and I only came forward when your messenger's messenger was delayed for me, fearing that it might have been displeasure from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger." He said: Then Surat al-Hujurat was revealed: {O you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with information, verify it, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} up to this point: {...as a favor from Allah and a blessing, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.}
