Ya'la ibn 'Uqba built (i.e., had marital relations) during Ramadan and woke up in a state of major ritual impurity (junub). He met Abu Hurayrah and asked him, and Abu Hurayrah said: "Break your fast." Ya'la asked: "Should I not fast this day and make it up another day?" Abu Hurayrah said: "Break your fast." So Ya'la went to Marwan and told him. Marwan sent Abu Bakr ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith to the Mother of the Believers (Umm Salamah), who said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wake up among us in a state of junub — not from a wet dream — and would continue fasting." Abu Bakr returned to Marwan and told him. Marwan said: "Go confront Abu Hurayrah with this." Abu Hurayrah said: "He is a neighbor, a neighbor (i.e., he was too close to confront)." Marwan insisted, so Abu Bakr met Abu Hurayrah and told him. Abu Hurayrah said: "I did not hear it directly from the Prophet (peace be upon him); rather, al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas informed me of it."
