Affan narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us: Qatadah narrated to us: Al-Ala' ibn Ziyad al-Adawi narrated to us, and Yazid the brother of Mutarrif narrated to me, and Uqbah narrated to me - all of these said: Mutarrif narrated to me that Iyad ibn Himar told him that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say in his sermon: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me to teach you what you did not know - and he mentioned the hadith, and said: The weak one who has no strength, those among you who are mere followers, seeking neither family nor wealth. A man said to Mutarrif: O Abu Abdullah, is he from among the freed slaves or from the Arabs? He said: He is the dependent who belongs to a man, obtained from among his servants through illicit union, not through marriage. And he said: The people of Paradise are three: a ruler who is just, giving charity, sincere, certain in faith; a man who is merciful and tender-hearted toward every relative and Muslim; and a man who is chaste, poor, and given to charity. Hammam said: Some of the companions of Qatadah said - and I do not know it except that Yunus al-Iskaf said - he said to me: Indeed Qatadah did not hear the hadith of Iyad ibn Himar from Mutarrif. I said: He narrated it to us from Mutarrif, and you say he did not hear it from Mutarrif? He said: Then a Bedouin came and began questioning him, and grew bold with him. We said to the Bedouin: Ask him whether he heard the hadith of Iyad ibn Himar from Mutarrif. So he asked him, and he said: No, four people narrated it to me from Mutarrif - and he named three, the ones I mentioned to you.
