Muhammad ibn Abi 'Adi narrated to us, from Sulayman, from Abu Tamimah, from Duljah ibn Qays, that al-Hakam al-Ghifari said to a man — or a man said to him — 'Do you remember when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the hollowed trunk and the pitch-lined vessel, or one of the two, and the gourd and the green jar?' He said: 'Yes, and I bear witness to that.' Abu Abd al-Rahman said: One of our companions narrated to me, saying: I heard 'Arim say: 'Do you know why he was named Duljah?' We said: 'No.' He said: 'They traveled by night to Makkah, and his mother gave birth to him during that night journey at that time, so he was named Duljah.'
