حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ الْخُزَاعِيُّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ الْهَادِ عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ مَوْلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ سَمِعَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ رَجُلًا يَقْرَأُ آيَةً مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَقْرَأَكَهَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَقَدْ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى غَيْرِ هَذَا فَذَهَبَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ آيَةُ كَذَا وَكَذَا ثُمَّ قَرَأَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ فَقَالَ الْآخَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ هَكَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ فَأَيَّ ذَلِكَ قَرَأْتُمْ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنْتُمْ وَلَا تَمَارَوْا فِيهِ فَإِنَّ الْمِرَاءَ فِيهِ كُفْرٌ أَوْ آيَةُ الْكُفْرِ.

Abu Salamah al-Khuza'i narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed us, saying: Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Usamah ibn al-Had informed me, from Busr ibn Sa'id, from Abu Qays, the freed slave of Amr ibn al-'As, who said: Amr ibn al-'As heard a man reciting a verse from the Qur'an, and said: 'Who taught you to recite it thus?' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me to recite it differently from this.' So the two of them went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and one of them said: 'O Messenger of Allah, such-and-such verse,' then recited it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'It was revealed thus.' Then the other said: 'O Messenger of Allah,' and recited it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: 'Is it not thus, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'It was revealed thus.' The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'This Qur'an was revealed according to seven modes of recitation, so whichever of these you recite, you have done well. Do not dispute about it, for disputing about it is disbelief' — or 'a sign of disbelief.'
