حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ جَابِرٍ الطَّائِيُّ عَنْ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ فَقَالَ الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَعْلَمَهُ النَّاسُ.

Abd al-Quddus Abu al-Mughira al-Khawlani narrated to us, he said: Safwan - meaning Ibn Amr - narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Jabir al-Ta'i narrated to us, from al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about righteousness and sin, and he said: 'Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers within yourself and which you dislike people to know.'
