Ubaydah ibn Humayd told us, Umar ibn Abdullah ibn Ya'la ibn Murrah told me, from his father, from his grandfather Ya'la ibn Murrah, who said: I bathed and perfumed myself with a scented cosmetic, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to wipe our faces. When he drew near me, he began to keep his hand away from the perfume. When he finished, he said, 'O Ya'la, what led you to use this perfume - have you married?' I said, 'No.' He said to me, 'Go and wash it off.' He said: So I passed by a well and kept throwing myself into it, then I kept rubbing myself with dirt until it was gone. He said: Then I came to him, and when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw me, he said, 'He has returned to the good of his lofty religion, he has repented, and the sky has poured forth rain.'
