Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, Ayyub ibn 'Utbah narrated to us, 'Ata' Abu al-Najashi narrated to us, he said: Rafi' ibn Khadij narrated to us, who said: My uncle Zuhayr ibn Rafi' met me and said, "O son of my brother, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has forbidden us something that was beneficial to us." I said, "What is it, uncle?" He said, "He forbade us from renting out our cultivated land" - meaning our land at Sirar. I said, "Uncle, obedience to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is more deserving." [I asked] "What did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say about how we used to rent it out?" He said, "By the water channels' produce and by measures of barley." He said, "Then do not do that; cultivate it yourselves." He said: So we sold our lands at Sirar. 'Abdullah said: I asked my father about the hadiths of Rafi' ibn Khadij - sometimes he says "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us" and sometimes he says "from his two uncles" - and he said: They are all authentic, but the one I like most is the hadith of Ayyub.
