حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَرِيزٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَعْدَ بْنَ مَرْثَدٍ الرَّحَبِيَّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ حَوْشَبٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ بْنِ شَهْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ كُرَيْبَ بْنَ أَبْرَهَةَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ مَعَ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بِدَيْرِ الْمُرَّانِ وَذَكَرُوا الْكِبْرَ فَقَالَ كُرَيْبٌ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا رَيْحَانَةَ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ لَا يَدْخُلُ شَيْءٌ مِنْ الْكِبْرِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَتَجَمَّلَ بِسَبْقِ سَوْطِي وَشِسْعِ نَعْلِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَيْسَ بِالْكِبْرِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ إِنَّمَا الْكِبْرُ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ بِعَيْنَيْهِ.

Abu al-Mughira narrated to us: Hariz narrated to us, who said: I heard Sa'd b. Marthad al-Rahabi say: I heard Abd al-Rahman b. Hawshab narrating from Thawban b. Shahr, who said: I heard Kurayb b. Abraha - while he was sitting with Abd al-Malik at Dayr al-Murran, and they mentioned pride - Kurayb said: I heard Abu Rayhana say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "No trace of pride shall enter Paradise." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I like to adorn myself with the strap of my whip and the thong of my sandal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is not pride. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is beautiful and loves beauty. Pride is rejecting the truth out of foolishness and looking down on people with contempt."
