He said: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, who said: Sufyan ibn Husayn informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Mahmud ibn al-Rabi' or al-Rabi' ibn Mahmud - Yazid was uncertain - from 'Itban ibn Malik, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "I am a man of impaired sight, and between me and you is this valley and darkness," and I asked him to come and pray in my house so that I might take his place of prayer as a place of prayer for myself. He promised me he would do so. So he came, along with Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and the Ansar heard of it and came to him. A man among them held back, called Malik ibn al-Dukhshun, who was suspected of hypocrisy. They stayed for food, and they spoke among themselves and said: "He did not stay away from us, when he knew that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, visited us, except due to his hypocrisy." And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was praying. When he finished, he said: "Woe to him! Did he not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, sincerely seeking thereby [the pleasure of Allah]? Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden the Fire to whoever bears witness to it."
