Rawh told us: Sa'id told us, from Qatada, who said: Anas ibn Malik mentioned to us, from Abu Talha, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered on the day of Badr that twenty-four men of the chieftains of Quraysh be thrown into a pit among the pits of Badr, foul and putrid. And whenever he prevailed over a people, he would remain at the site for three nights. When it was the third day at Badr, he ordered his mount, and its saddle was fastened on it. Then he walked, and his companions followed him, and they said: "We think he is only going to relieve himself" - until he stood on the edge of the well, and began calling them by their names and the names of their fathers: "O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! Would it please you that you had obeyed Allah and His Messenger? For we have found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?" Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, are you speaking to bodies that have no souls in them?" He said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are no more able to hear what I say than they are." Qatada said: Allah brought them to life so that He made them hear his words as a rebuke, humiliation, degradation, sorrow, and regret. He said: Husayn told us, from Shayban, and he did not trace it back to Abu Talha, saying: "and degradation."
