حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ قَالَ أَصَبْتُ جَرَّةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا دَنَانِيرُ فِي إِمَارَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ فِي أَرْضِ الرُّومِ قَالَ وَعَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ بِهَا يَقْسِمُهَا بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَأَعْطَانِي مِثْلَ مَا أَعْطَى رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَأَيْتُهُ يَفْعَلُهُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَا نَفْلَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ الْخُمُسِ إِذًا لَأَعْطَيْتُكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ فَعَرَضَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ فَأَبَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ قُلْتُ مَا أَنَا بِأَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْكَ.

Affan narrated to us: Abu Awanah narrated to us: Asim ibn Kulayb narrated to us: Abu al-Juwayriyah narrated to me, he said: I came upon a red jar containing dinars during the governorship of Mu'awiyah, in the land of Rome. Over us was a man among the Companions of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, from Banu Sulaym, called Ma'n ibn Yazid. I brought it to him to divide among the Muslims, and he gave me the same as he gave any other man among them. Then he said: Were it not that I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and saw him do it - I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, say: There is no extra share [of spoils] except after the fifth [has been set aside] - I would have given you more. Then he took [some] and offered me from his own share, but I refused it, saying: I am no more entitled to it than you.
