Waki' told us: Zakariyya ibn Ishaq told us, from Amr ibn Abi Sufyan, who heard it from Muslim ibn Thafinah, who said: Ibn Alqamah appointed my father over the tax-collectorship of his people and ordered him to collect their zakat. He said: My father sent me among a group to bring him their zakat. He said: I went out until I came to an elderly man called Si'r. I said: "My father has sent me to you so that you may pay the zakat on your sheep." He said: "O son of my brother, what manner of selection do you take?" I said: "We select, to the point that we feel the udders of the sheep." He said: "O son of my brother, I will tell you that I was once in one of these mountain passes with sheep of mine in the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when two men came to me on a camel and said: 'We are the two messengers of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to you, so that you may pay the zakat on your sheep.' I said: 'What is due from me regarding them?' They said: 'A sheep.' So I went to a sheep whose place I knew, full of milk and fat, and brought it out to them. They said: 'This is a shafi' [a nursing or pregnant ewe], and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has forbidden us from taking a shafi'.' I said: 'What then?' They said: 'A yearling or two-year-old female kid.' So I went to a female kid that had not yet given birth though her time had come, and brought it out to them. They said: 'Hand it to us,' so I gave it to them, and they placed it with them on their camel, then departed." Abdullah said: I heard my father say - thus said Waki' - "Muslim ibn Thafinah" is a misreading; and Rawh said: "Ibn Shu'bah," and that is correct. My father said: and Bishr ibn al-Sirri said: "There is no god but Allah, here indeed is his son right here" - meaning Muslim ibn Shu'bah.
