Attab ibn Ziyad told us, Abdullah — that is, Ibn al-Mubarak — told us: Layth ibn Sa'd informed us: Ubaydullah ibn al-Mughirah told me, from Irak ibn Malik, that Hakim ibn Hizam said: Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most beloved man to me among the people in the Age of Ignorance. When he was given prophethood and went out to Medina, Hakim ibn Hizam attended the pilgrimage season while still a disbeliever, and found a robe of Dhu Yazan being sold, so he bought it for fifty dinars intending to give it as a gift to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He brought it to him in Medina and wanted him to accept it as a gift, but he refused. Ubaydullah said: I think he said, "We do not accept anything from polytheists, but if you wish, we will take it for its price." So I gave it to him when he refused it as a gift.
