Abu Sa'id told us, Abu 'Aqil told us, Abu al-Mutawakkil told us, who said: I came to Jabir ibn 'Abdullah and said, "Tell me a hadith you witnessed from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: My father died, leaving upon him a debt of twenty wasqs of dates, while we had various kinds of dates, and the 'ajwa dates were not enough to cover what we owed. I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him. He sent for my creditor, but he refused to accept anything except all the 'ajwa dates. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Go and give it to him." So I went to a shelter of ours, my companion and I, and we harvested our dates. We had a goat which we were feeding on poor dates, and it had grown fat, when two men approached us — the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and 'Umar. I said, "Welcome, O Messenger of Allah! Welcome, O 'Umar!" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "O Jabir, take us around this palm grove of yours." I said, "Yes." So we went around it, and I ordered the goat to be slaughtered. Then we brought a cushion, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, rested upon a cushion of hair stuffed with palm fiber, but for 'Umar I found no cushion. Then we brought a tray with fresh dates, dried dates, and meat on it, and set it before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and 'Umar, and they ate. I was a shy young man. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, rose to leave, my companion said, "O Messenger of Allah, some supplications from you." He said, "Yes, may Allah bless you." He said it again, "May Allah bless you." Then after that, I sent for my creditors, and they came with donkeys and sacks. I had resolved to buy for them 'ajwa dates to pay them what was owed from my father, and I paid them in full — by the One in Whose hand is my soul — twenty wasqs of 'ajwa dates, with a good surplus remaining. So I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to give him the good news of what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had brought me. When I informed him, he said, "O Allah, to You belongs the praise; O Allah, to You belongs the praise." Then he said to 'Umar, "Jabir has indeed paid his creditor in full," and 'Umar began praising Allah.
