Abd al-Samad told us, my father told me, Kathir ibn Shinzir told us, Ata' ibn Abi Rabah told us, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me on an errand. I went and came back having accomplished it, and I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and greeted him with salaam, but he did not return the greeting. Something occurred to me that only Allah knows. I said [to myself]: "Perhaps the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is upset with me for having been slow." So I greeted him again, but he did not return the greeting, and something occurred to me, only Allah knows, worse than the first time. Then I greeted him again and he returned the greeting, and said: "Nothing prevented me from returning your greeting except that I was praying." He had been on his mount, facing a direction other than the qiblah.
