Isma'il told us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, from Ata', who said: Jabir ibn Abdullah said: We, the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered ihram for Hajj alone, purely, with nothing else combined with it. We arrived in Makkah on the morning of the fourth day that had passed of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Exit ihram and make it an Umrah." It reached him that we were saying: "Since there are only five days between us and Arafah, he has ordered us to exit ihram, so that some of us will go forth to Mina with our private parts still dripping semen (i.e., having just had relations with their wives)." So he addressed us and said: "What you have said has reached me, and indeed I am the most God-fearing among you and the most righteous of you. Were it not for the sacrificial animal (hady), I would have exited ihram; and if I had known beforehand what I later came to know, I would not have brought the hady. Exit ihram and make it an Umrah." He said: Ali, may Allah, the Exalted, be pleased with him, arrived from Yemen, and he was asked: "For what did you enter ihram?" He said: "For what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered ihram." He said: "Then bring your hady and remain in the state of ihram as you are."
