حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ طَهْمَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا قَالَ كَانَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ تَفْخَرُ عَلَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْكَحَنِي مِنْ السَّمَاءِ وَأَطْعَمَ عَلَيْهَا يَوْمَئِذٍ خُبْزًا وَلَحْمًا وَكَانَ الْقَوْمُ جُلُوسًا كَمَا هُمْ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَخَرَجَ فَلَبِثَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَلْبَثَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ وَالْقَوْمُ جُلُوسٌ كَمَا هُمْ فَشَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعُرِفَ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَنُزِّلَ آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ.

Hashim told us, Muhammad ibn ‘Abdillah told us, ‘Isa ibn Tahman told us, he said: I heard Anas say: Zaynab bint Jahsh used to boast to the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying, "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, gave me in marriage from the heavens," and bread and meat were served that day. The people remained seated as they were in the house. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, got up and went out, and stayed away as long as Allah willed, then returned, and the people were still seated as they were. That was hard upon him, and it showed on his face, so the verse of the veil was sent down.
