حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ أَخْبَرَنِي عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ لَمَّا أَرَادَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ إِلَى الرُّومِ قِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ كِتَابَكَ لَا يُقْرَأُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مَخْتُومًا فَاتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَنَقَشَهُ أَوْ نَقَشَ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى بَيَاضِهِ فِي يَدِهِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ لَمَّا أَرَادَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ إِلَى الرُّومِ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ.

Hashim told us, Shu’bah told us, Qatadah said: he informed me, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wanted to write to the Byzantines, it was said to him, "Your letter will not be read unless it is sealed." So he had a silver ring made and had it engraved - or it was engraved - "Muhammad, Messenger of Allah." He said: It is as if I can still see its whiteness on his hand.
