'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Amr told us: Hisham told us, from Qatadah, from Anas, who said: The people questioned the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, until they wearied him with questions. One day he ascended the pulpit and said, "You will not ask me about anything but that I will make it clear to you." Anas said: I began looking right and left, and every person had wrapped his head in his garment, weeping. A man stood up — one who, whenever there was a dispute, would be attributed to someone other than his father — and said, "O Messenger of Allah, who is my father?" He said, "Your father is Hudhafah." Abu 'Amir said: I think he also said: then a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, in Paradise or in the Fire?" He said, "In the Fire." Then 'Umar spoke up and said, "We are content with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our religion, and with Muhammad as our Prophet; we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of trials." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I have never seen, in both good and evil, anything like today; indeed Paradise and the Fire were shown to me, until I saw them just beyond this wall."
