Ibn Abi Adiyy narrated to us from Humayd, from Anas: that Abd Allah ibn Salam came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, upon his arrival in Madinah, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am going to ask you about three matters which no one knows except a prophet." He said, "Ask." He said, "What is the first sign of the Hour? What is the first thing the people of Paradise will eat? And from what does a child resemble its father and mother?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Gabriel, peace be upon him, has just informed me of them." He said, "That one is the enemy of the Jews among the angels." He said, "As for the first sign of the Hour, it is a fire that will emerge from the east and gather the people to the west. As for the first thing the people of Paradise will eat, it is the extra lobe of a fish's liver. As for the resemblance of the child to its father and mother: if the man's fluid precedes the woman's fluid, the child resembles him; and if the woman's fluid precedes the man's fluid, the child resembles her." He said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." And he said, "O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a people of slander; if they learn of my conversion to Islam before I tell them, they will slander me before you, so send for them and ask them about me, what kind of man is Ibn Salam among you?" So he sent for them and said, "What kind of man is Abd Allah ibn Salam among you?" They said, "The best of us and the son of the best of us, our most learned and the son of our most learned, and the most understanding of us and the son of the most understanding of us." He said, "What do you think - if he embraced Islam, would you embrace Islam?" They said, "Allah forbid that he should do that." He said: So Ibn Salam came out and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said, "He is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us, our most ignorant and the son of our most ignorant." Ibn Salam said, "This is what I feared."
