Ibn Abi Adiyy narrated to us from Humayd, who said: Anas was asked, "Did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raise his hands?" He said: It was said to him on a Friday, "O Messenger of Allah, the rain has been withheld, the land has become barren, and the livestock have perished." He said: So he raised his hands until I saw the whiteness of his armpits, and he prayed for rain. He raised his hands and prayed for rain, and he raised his hands while we could not see a single cloud in the sky. When we finished the prayer, even someone whose house was close by found it hard to make his way home. Then, when the following Friday came, they said, "O Messenger of Allah, the houses have collapsed and the travelers have been held back!" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, smiled at the speed with which the son of Adam grows weary, and said, "O Allah, around us, not upon us," and it cleared away from Madinah.
