Affan narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ali ibn Zayd, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The last two men to come out of the Fire — Allah will say to one of them, 'O son of Adam, what have you prepared for this day? Did you ever do good? Did you hope in Me?' He will say, 'No, my Lord.' So he will be commanded to the Fire, and he will be the most regretful of the people of the Fire. Then He will say to the other, 'O son of Adam, what have you prepared for this day? Did you ever do good, or did you hope in Me?' He will say, 'No, my Lord, except that I used to hope in You.' Then a tree will be raised up for him, and he will say, 'My Lord, let me stay beneath this tree, so I may take shelter in its shade, eat of its fruit, and drink of its water,' and he will pledge not to ask for anything beyond it, so He will let him stay beneath it. Then another tree will be raised for him, more beautiful than the first and with more abundant water, and he will say, 'My Lord, let me stay beneath it; I will not ask You for anything beyond it, so I may take shelter in its shade, eat of its fruit, and drink of its water.' Then He will say, 'O son of Adam, did you not pledge not to ask Me for anything beyond it?' He will say, 'My Lord, this one — I will not ask You for anything beyond it,' and he will pledge not to ask for anything beyond it, so He will let him stay beneath it. Then another tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two and with more abundant water, and he will say, 'My Lord, let me stay beneath this one,' so He will bring him near to it, and he will pledge not to ask for anything beyond it. Then he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise, and he will not be able to restrain himself, and he will say, 'My Lord, Paradise! My Lord, admit me to Paradise!' Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will say, 'Ask, and wish,' so he will ask and wish for as much as three days of the days of this world, and Allah will inspire him with things he has no knowledge of, so he will ask and wish, and when he has finished, He will say, 'It is yours, what you have asked for.'" Abu Sa'id said: "And the like of it besides." And Abu Hurayrah said: "And ten times its like besides." Each of the two said to his companion: "Narrate what you heard, and I will narrate what I heard."
