Yahya ibn Abi Bukayr told us: Zuhayr ibn Muhammad told us, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from al-Nu'man ibn Abi al-'Ayyash, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The lowest in rank among the people of Paradise is a man whose face God has turned away from the Fire toward Paradise, and a shaded tree has been shown to him, and he says: 'O Lord, bring me forward to this tree so I may be in its shade.' God says: 'Might it be that if I do that, you will ask Me for something else?' He says: 'No, by Your might.' So God brings him forward to it, and shows him a tree with shade and fruit, and he says: 'O Lord, bring me forward to this tree so I may be in its shade and eat of its fruit.' God says to him: 'Might it be that if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else?' He says: 'No, by Your might.' So God brings him forward to it, and another tree is shown to him, with shade, fruit, and water, and he says: 'O Lord, bring me forward to this tree so I may be in its shade, eat of its fruit, and drink of its water.' He says to him: 'Might it be that if I do that, you will ask Me for something else?' He says: 'No, by Your might — I will not ask You for anything else.' So God brings him forward to it, and the gate of Paradise appears before him, and he says: 'O Lord, bring me forward to the gate of Paradise, so I may be beneath its threshold and look at its people.' So God brings him forward to it, and he sees the people of Paradise and what is in it, and he says: 'O Lord, admit me into Paradise.'" He said: So God admits him into Paradise. He said: When he enters Paradise, he says: "This is mine." He said: So God, Mighty and Majestic, says to him: "Wish." So he wishes, and God reminds him: "Ask for such-and-such, and such-and-such," until when his wishes have run out, God, Mighty and Majestic, says: "It is yours, and ten times its like." He said: Then when he enters Paradise, his two wives from among the maidens with wide, beautiful eyes come in to him and say to him: "Praise be to God who gave you life for us and gave us life for you." So he says: "No one has been given the like of what I have been given." He said: And the lowest of the people of the Fire in punishment is one who is shod with two sandals of fire, from the heat of which his brain boils.
