785/1024-(صحيح الإسناد)عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله(2)قال: قدم معاوية حاجا حجته الأولى وهو خليفة فدخل عليه عثمان بن حنيف الأنصاري، فقال: السلام عليك أيها الأمير ورحمة الله، فأنكرها أهل الشام، وقالوا: من هذا المنافق الذي يقصر بتحية أمير المؤمنين؟ فبرك عثمان على ركبته، ثم قال: يا أمير المؤمنين! إن هؤلاء أنكروا علي أمراً أنت أعلم به منهم، فوالله لقد حييت بها أبا بكر، وعمر، وعثمان فما أنكره منهم أحد. فقال معاوية لمن تكلم من أهل الشام:" على رسلكم؛ فإنه قد كان بعض ما يقول، ولكن أهل الشام قد حدثت هذه الفتن، قالو: لا تقصر عندنا تحية خليفتنا؛ فإني إخالكم يا أهل المدينة تقولون لعامل الصدقة: أيها الأمير".

Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah said: Mu'awiyah came on his first Hajj as caliph, and Uthman ibn Hanif al-Ansari entered upon him and said: 'Peace be upon you, O Amir, and the mercy of Allah.' The Syrians objected and said: 'Who is this hypocrite who shortens the greeting of the Commander of the Faithful?' Uthman knelt and said: 'O Commander of the Faithful! These people have objected to something you know better than they do. By Allah, I greeted Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman with the same greeting, and none of them objected.' Mu'awiyah said to the Syrians who spoke: 'Hold on; what he says is partly true. But the people of Syria have had these tribulations arise. They said: Do not shorten the greeting of our caliph. I think you, people of Madinah, say to the collector of charity: O Amir.'
