Hadrat Sa'd ibn Hisham narrates: 'I divorced my wife and came to Madinah to sell my property, buy weapons, and go for jihad. I met a group of the Companions who said: "Six of us wanted to do the same, but the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade us and said: 'There is indeed in the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) a beautiful example for you.'" I went to Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) and asked about the witr of the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He said: "Shall I direct you to the most knowledgeable person about the witr of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)? Go to Hadrat Aisha." I went to her, taking Hakim ibn Aflah along. We sought permission. She asked: "Who is it?" "Hakim ibn Aflah." "Who is with you?" "Sa'd ibn Hisham." "Hisham ibn 'Amir, who was martyred at Uhud?" I said: "Yes." She said: "What a fine man 'Amir was!" I said: "O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)." She said: "Do you not read the Qur'an? The character of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was the Qur'an." I said: "Tell me about his night prayer." She said: "Do you not read: 'O you wrapped in garments'?" I said: "Indeed." She said: "When the beginning of this surah was revealed, the Companions stood in prayer until their feet swelled. Its ending was withheld in heaven for twelve months. Then its ending was revealed, and the night prayer became voluntary after being obligatory." I said: "Tell me about his witr." She said: "He would pray eight rak'ahs, sitting only in the eighth. Then he would stand and pray another rak'ah, sitting only in the eighth and ninth, and giving salam only in the ninth. Then he would pray two rak'ahs sitting — so that was eleven rak'ahs, my son. When he grew older and gained weight, he would make witr with seven, sitting only in the sixth and seventh, giving salam only in the seventh. Then he would pray two rak'ahs sitting — so that was nine rak'ahs, my son. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) never spent an entire night in prayer till morning, never recited the entire Qur'an in one night, and never fasted a complete month except Ramadan. When he performed any prayer, he would be consistent with it. And when sleep overcame him at night, he would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day." He said: "I went to Hadrat Ibn Abbas and told him. He said: 'By Allah, this is the authentic hadith! If I were on speaking terms with her, I would have gone and heard it directly.' I said: 'If I had known you were not speaking to her, I would not have told you.'"'

حضرت سعد بن ہشام فرماتے ہیں: میں نے اپنی بیوی کو طلاق دی اور مدینہ آیا تاکہ اپنی جائیداد بیچ کر ہتھیار خریدوں اور جہاد کروں — صحابۂ کرام کی ایک جماعت سے ملا تو فرمایا: ہم میں سے چھ لوگوں نے ایسا ارادہ کیا تھا تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے منع فرمایا اور فرمایا: تمہارے لیے رسول اللہ میں بہترین نمونہ ہے — میں حضرت ابنِ عباس (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما) کے پاس آیا اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے وتر کے بارے میں پوچھا — فرمایا: تمہیں وتر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے سب سے زیادہ جاننے والے کے پاس لے چلوں — حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس جاؤ — میں ان کے پاس گیا اور حکیم بن افلح کو ساتھ لیا — ہم نے حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ سے اجازت مانگی — فرمایا: کون ہے؟ حکیم بن افلح — فرمایا: تمہارے ساتھ کون ہے؟ سعد بن ہشام — فرمایا: ہشام بن عامر جو اُحد میں شہید ہوئے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: جی ہاں — فرمایا: عامر بہت اچھے آدمی تھے — میں نے عرض کیا: اے اُمّ المؤمنین! مجھے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے اخلاق بتائیں — فرمایا: کیا تم قرآن نہیں پڑھتے؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کا خُلق قرآن تھا — میں نے عرض کیا: مجھے قیامِ لیل کے بارے میں بتائیں — فرمایا: کیا تم يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ نہیں پڑھتے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: بلکہ (پڑھتا ہوں) — فرمایا: اس سورت کا اول حصہ نازل ہوا تو صحابہ نے اتنا قیام کیا کہ ان کے پاؤں سوج گئے — آخری حصہ بارہ ماہ آسمان پر رکا رہا — پھر نازل ہوا تو قیامِ لیل فرض کے بعد نفل ہو گیا — میں نے عرض کیا: مجھے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے وتر کے بارے میں بتائیں — فرمایا: آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم آٹھ رکعتیں پڑھتے اور صرف آٹھویں میں بیٹھتے — پھر اٹھ کر نویں رکعت پڑھتے — صرف آٹھویں اور نویں میں بیٹھتے — سلام صرف نویں میں پھیرتے — پھر بیٹھ کر دو رکعتیں پڑھتے — تو کل گیارہ رکعتیں ہوتیں اے بیٹے — جب عمر بڑھی اور جسم بھاری ہوا تو سات رکعتوں سے وتر پڑھتے — صرف چھٹی اور ساتویں میں بیٹھتے — سلام صرف ساتویں میں پھیرتے — پھر بیٹھ کر دو رکعتیں پڑھتے — تو کل نو رکعتیں ہوتیں اے بیٹے — رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے کبھی پوری رات صبح تک قیام نہیں کیا — نہ ایک رات میں پورا قرآن پڑھا — نہ رمضان کے سوا کوئی مکمل مہینہ روزے رکھے — جب کوئی نماز پڑھتے تو اس پر مداومت فرماتے — اور جب رات کو نیند غالب آ جاتی تو دن میں بارہ رکعتیں پڑھتے — میں حضرت ابنِ عباس کے پاس آیا اور بتایا — فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! یہ حقیقی حدیث ہے — اگر میں ان سے بات کرتا ہوتا تو خود جا کر سنتا — میں نے عرض کیا: اگر مجھے معلوم ہوتا کہ آپ ان سے بات نہیں کرتے تو میں آپ کو نہ بتاتا۔
